My husband and I are both Christians, but he gets angry sometimes and has hit me before. What can I do?

God's plan for every marriage, especially a Christian one, is peace and love. He intends for the husband to love his wife as Christ loves the Church (see Ephesians 5). God has called every husband to spiritual leadership in the family and He has called every wife to submission to that leadership. When this model is not practiced, family members are robbed of the joy that the Lord has planned for them in their Christian home.

The focus here is not that your husband is a Christian; this type of behavior would be wrong for any husband. If you or your children are in danger, you must remove yourself and your kids from the situation while you seek help. First seek the counsel of a trusted pastor or Christian friends. They can help you find crisis centers or counseling services that can intervene. You will feel so much relief when you can share your burden with someone who cares.

The goal in any intervention or counseling situation should be healing and restoration. God wants your marriage to be healed. It will take time, effort, and much prayer, but it can be done! Philippians 4:13 promises that you can do anything through Christ, who gives you the strength you need.
