Christian Cosmology

Dark energy is defined by Wikipedia as:  a hypothetical form of energy that permeates all of space, tends to accelerate the expansion and accounts for 73% of the total mass energy of the universe.  Science is currently busying itself to find a dark matter mathematical formula called ‘cosmological equation of state’; the relationship between temperature, pressure and combined matter, energy and vacuum energy for any region of space.  In other words, they are trying to put a formula on something they cannot measure or see in the usual sense.  It, along with dark matter, only make themselves apparent through the gravitational effects on the other 5 % of the visible universe we live in.  The ‘cosmological constant’ (denoted by the Greek letter lambda) was an addition to the equation Einstein made for his original theory of general relativity equation to explain the effects of dark energy on the universe.  Interestingly, he called it the ‘God fudge factor’.  Cosmologist’ wrestle with equations in an attempt to determine the future of the universe.  Is it cyclic; big bang…expansion…contraction…big crunch…big bang…expansion…contraction…big crunch etc?  Or, as it appears distant galaxies are actually accelerating, will it expand until it slowly burns itself out into oblivion?

The Bible says in Isaiah 54:8 and 9 that ‘God’s ways are past finding out’.  Our best science is foolishness to Him.  But He also said that if any man lacks wisdom, just ask and He would give it.  Like any good father to his child, He will explain things in ways we can understand. You may not be able to solve the ‘unified field theory’ equation, but if you know where the forces that govern life are coming from, you’ll be smarter than most of today’s scientist.

Genesis made clear that the creation was a cooperative operation undertaken by the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  Each part of the God-head initiates a particular form of motivational force that is clearly explained.  Colossians 1:15-17 describes Christ:  “And He is the image of the invisible God, the first born of all creation.  For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities- all things have been created by Him and for Him.  And He is before things, and by Him all things hold together.”   The last part is literal in that a force is required to hold together the nucleus of atoms; otherwise the positive charges of the protons would drive them apart.  The Holy Spirit is the mind of God, ‘moving across the face of the waters’.   He sees and contemplates all, making God’s will known.  By yielding and being filled by Him, we can work God’s will in our lives.

God the Father (this is where our discussion of ‘dark energy’ is going) is described as being covered by darkness in Psalms 18:9-11 and Isaiah 50:3.  He is invisible according to Colossians 1:15.  In the book of Genesis, God ‘speaks’ creation into existence; “Let there be…”  There is something scientist call the ‘string theory’ that represents the most fundamental parts of matter.  The strings have been described as something akin to vibrations or musical notes which change in composition (like creating a song) to form the next more complex elements called ‘quarks’.   We might speculate that this is a part of ‘God’s voice’.  He and His home in the ‘third heaven’ are timeless and incorruptible, while our visible universe is cursed as a result of sin with entropy; another word for corruption and decay over time.  While theories abound with multiple dimensions and mirror universes, the Bible only specifies two:  Though this does not at all place a limit on His ability to create as many different universes as He might like.

Limitations of time and entropy are the methods God devised to mitigate the results of His will being broken, first by Satan and then by humanity.  Getting back to the force that God exerts on creation, we see in Isaiah 40:22, 42:5, 44:24, 45:12, and 51:13 that He ‘stretches out the heavens’.   These verses show emphatically that the prophet understood that the universe was in the process of continued expansion; a fact that was not known until this century.   This force is opposite to that of the Son’s who holds matter together.  Look at Psalm 18:9 again:  “He bowed the heavens also and came down with thick darkness under His feet.”  To ‘bow the heavens’ might be interpreted as ‘displacing space/time’ where God then emerges from the area we know as eternal heaven and science believes is ‘dark energy’.

So what about the final destination of this universe?  Christians know from II Peter 3:10 and 12, Isaiah 34:4 and 51:6 that the present universe goes up in a nuclear fire ball and ‘vanishes like smoke’.  Whether it’s the result of the ‘cosmic crunch’, Jesus letting go of the atom or God stretching them to breaking, the result is the same.  In the complete destruction of matter, the atoms would decay into their simplest parts, and as the string theory suggests, musical vibrations which simply fade away.

Science’ vision for the future is indeed bleak.  We either bounce back and forth into a new universe, condemned with the same weakness and mistakes as before or we die out with a whimper.  But in the glorious new beginning promised by the Lord, the curse is lifted from His children and all creation begins again without entropy, time limits or the existence of any will but God’s.

This is only possible because of the grace He extended to you and me through His Son Jesus Christ.  He died for our sins (being ‘good’ by your standards is not enough to get into heaven).  Accept that payment and turn away from sin.  Too many people are continuing living their old life styles thinking they bought the fire insurance. Repentance is a requirement of faith.  By the power that raised Christ, everyone that has ever lived will be raised from the dead; some to eternal life with Him and others to eternal judgment where even the ‘worms won’t die’.   If you are not sure where you stand with Him, make sure today.
